Inside an Orthodox Church
Everything within an Orthodox church – from the narthex and nave to the iconostasis and placement of icons – is designed to direct us toward Christ and His Kingdom. Yet some of us may be unaware of the symbolism and meaning behind this design. In this video from Be the Bee, Steve Christoforou takes us on a six-minute tour of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Merrick, New York and explains how our movement from the nave to the altar parallels our journey from purification to deification. Watch and learn more about the design of our sacred worship space.
The Pantocrator
The highest, most imposing space in Orthodox churches of the Byzantine style is the centrally located dome from which the icon of Christ the Pantocrator looks down from the heavens upon those worshipping below. Learn more about this part of our worship space in another video from Trisagion Films.
More about the Orthodox Worship Space
Finally, we have several videos from the Theoria series in which Frederica Mathewes-Green describes the Orthodox worship space, including the Iconostasis, Apse, and Altar. A follow-up video to the one below can be found here.
